World Pride organisers negotiate gay march date
The Jerusalem Open House (JOH) has responded to Israeli authorities with negotiation after government ministers thwarted plans for a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Pride and Tolerance march in Jerusalem. Despite this setback Noa Sattah, the executive director of the JOH, issued a rallying call to Israel saying: I call everyone who cares about the future of Jerusalem to come and take part in the march." PinkNews.co.uk reported last week that Minister for Jerusalem Affairs, Yaakov Edri, told JOH which was organising the march, to hold the gay pride parade outside of the capital city. Initially, no reason for the demand was given, but then the minister cited "heavy workload" on the police, despite the fact that other public events are taking place as scheduled.
Pride parade to go ahead in Jersusalem
Organisers of the Gay Pride parade in Jerusalem have indicated they intend to march, despite being denied a permit, 365gay.com reports. A spokesperson for Open House, the GLBT organisation that organises the event, said it was prepared to march, regardless whether or not a permit was approved. .
Comment: Is newspaper backlash aid to homophobia?
PinkNews.co.uks Dave McElhill ponders press reporting regarding EU enlargement and asks if the tones are helping the international gay community. The recent headlines have been full of commentary regarding the likely influx of new immigrants when Bulgaria and Romania join the EU. The right wing press though is aiming to keep levels of legal immigration down from countries which are openly anti-gay, as shown by the response to pride marches throughout former Soviet states, in particular Latvia. Questions remain, though, as to whether or not the two new EU candidate countries are as openly homophobic. If so this presents grounds for possible immigration to avoid discrimination. Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, has not held a gay pride march in over 4 years.
