Jerusalem gay parade in cards
More controversy? Jerusalem's Open House for Pride and Tolerance has decided Sunday to hold a gay pride parade in the capital this year as well, GLBT portal Gogay has reported. The decision was taken by a 5 to 1 vote during the Open House's management committee meeting, which featured various community members who expressed their views on the subject. Most participants backed another parade in order to show they would not capitulate in the face of ultra-Orthodox and homophobic threats. However, some participants did voice concern over the risks inherent in holding the parade, while others wondered whether the gay community has not lost its momentum. Open House Director Hagai Elad said that the date for the next pride parade will be "set as soon as possible and be published following the completion of a brief process of checking the opportunities at our disposal in holding the parade." "The Open House always saw special significance in holding the parade in Jerusalem as part of our struggle, and as part of the ongoing struggle to advance the rights of the community in the city and promote democratic values in the city," he said.
150 people expected to take part in Gay Pride
The organisers of this weekend's Gay Pride Festival have vowed to go ahead with the festival this weekend even after receiving a homophobic email from a disgruntled member of the public. Matthew Monaghan, Chairperson of Galway Pride told the Galway Independent the event would go ahead. "It was basically trying to put us off having the parade. It was trying to stop people from coming out over the weekend but it won't work. The email isn't going to make us change any of our plans for the weekend and why should it".This is the 27th instalment of the Galway Gay Pride Festival, which is the oldest festival of its kind in the country. The festival kicks off on Thursday evening, 17 August, at Club Arus na nGael at 7.30pm. The main event of the weekend will occur on Saturday afternoon at 2.30pm when the Brod Ireland Pride Parade makes its way through the streets of Galway, starting off on Prospect Hill and finishing up in Fr Griffin Park.
